A century of taste science.
1901
David Hänig published research showing subtle differences in sensitivity across parts of the tongue.
1942
Edwin Boring, a Harvard psychologist, redrew Hänig’s data without a meaningful scale. The rigid zone map appeared in textbooks everywhere — and stayed for decades.
1974
Virginia Collins ran the definitive test. Every part of the tongue detects every taste. The map had been wrong for 73 years.
1991
Linda Bartoshuk identified something more meaningful than zones. Taste is genetic. She classified the population into three groups: supertasters, medium tasters, and nontasters.
